Reading Eggs is an app and online resource with the mission of supporting a child’s reading journey and to foster a feeling of enthusiasm and excitement for reading. As a part of Bridget Productions we were asked to create this video which captures the mission of Reading Eggs. In this piece we have several interviews with children who are talking about what they want to be when they grow up. Learning to read is shown as a way of them getting closer to their goals and a way to unlock bright futures for themselves.
I was brought onto this project to design and animate some playful elements to be overlaid the footage to show their dreams coming to life.
In this project I worked alongside a video editor who provided me with a rough edit so I could get an idea of the length of each scene and where the elements could be positioned. We discussed what style would work best and decided on a bright, playful style with bold solid shapes and white outlines which were in-keeping with the Reading Eggs logo and brand.
After sending these to the client and getting a few amends I moved onto the animation which I did in After Effects. Having the edit meant I was able to overlay my animations and make sure it fit the composition and adjusted to any camera moves.
To match the playful tone of this piece I kept the animation style bouncy and fun. Adding fun little details like the little cleaning robot really helped the piece feel whimsical and child-like while also demonstrating the power and breadth of the children’s imaginations.
As well as these illustrated elements, the client also wanted to include their mascot, Reggie, who pops up at various points through the video. I was given some 3D renders which I was able to cut up to allow simple character animation. I then composited him into the background with a subtle shadow and added camera tracking when needed.
